DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN SIEM REAP (D)
On arrival at Siem Reap international airport you will be welcomed by your driver at the airport and transferred to your hotel in town. (Cambodian visa on arrival can be obtained by most nationalities in Siem Reap.*) Siem Reap has been now transformed into a sophisticated tourist centre for receiving visitors, thanks to the temple of Angkor, the ancient capital of the Khmer Empire.
Relax today from your long-haul international flight (early check-in at the hotel upon request).
Dinner will be served at your hotel.
Overnight at your hotel.
DAY 2: SIEM REAP (B,L,D)
In the morning, you will visit Angkor Thom which was the last capital of the Great Khmer Empire under the reign of Jayavarman VII. This city is surrounded by an 8 m high wall, with each side of the city being 4 km long, drawing a perfect square. You will enter the city from the ancient South Gate, an impressive stone gate carved with Elephants and four giant faces. On each side of the entrance path, a row of 54 gods or demons is holding the sacred Naga snake. From here, continue to Bayon Temple in the centre of the city. This 12th century masterpiece is a study in splendour and Cambodian architecture. The exterior gallery walls have extensive, superb bas-reliefs, particularly the East and South Galleries. The Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King are also must-visits as they are both known for their intricate bas-reliefs.
Lunch will be served at local restaurant.
Today, travel to the “gem” of the Angkor area, the pretty temple of Banteay Srey, which is best viewed in the warm morning light. The so-called “Citadel of the Women” remains the best preserved temple in Cambodia. It displays some of the finest examples of classical Khmer art as this small temple is noted for its truly remarkable fine bas-reliefs. Banteay Srey is unique in that it is constructed of pink sandstone, which is seen nowhere else in Angkor.
Then, you will be back to the unique Ta Prohm which has been left largely as it was found: overgrown by jungle trees and vines, with many parts of the temple crumbling to the ground. This makes the ‘Tomb Raider Temple’ one of the most picturesque and memorable of the Angkor temples.
End of the day, enjoy the spectacular view from above as you depart on a tethered Helium Balloon ride which will lead you 200 meters straight up in the air. From this height you will have amazing aerial views of Angkor Wat, Phnom Bakheng, West Baray and other ruins amongst the surrounding jungle and rice paddies glimmering in the best evening light.
In the evening a dinner show will get you acquainted with the ancient Khmer traditional Apsara-dances in a local restaurant. Overnight at your hotel.
DAY 3: SIEM REAP – PAKSE (B,L,D)
After breakfast, depart by your private vehicle on a very special sightseeing tour of the famous Angkor Wat. Built during the reign of King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century, Angkor Wat is constructed following the model of the temple mountain symbolising the Mount Meru, home of the gods. The divine residence of Vishnu, the King himself was to reside here after his death. Inside the temple, the walls are covered with stone carvings and bas-reliefs depicting Hindu mythology and the wars Suryavarman II fought during his reign. Moreover, Angkor Wat is well known for the over 2.000 Apsara dancers decorating the temple. Construction is thought to have taken some thirty years of intensive labor. Today, Angkor Wat is figured on Cambodia’s national flag as the temple symbolizes the soul of the Khmer people.
Early lunch will be served at local restaurant before you are transferred to the Siem Reap International Airport for your onward flight to Pakse in the afternoon. (Lao visa on arrival can be obtained by most nationalities in Pakse*). In the provincial capitol in Southern Laos you will get an authentic insight into the local life during your visit the local market and monastery.
Dinner at hotel.
Overnight at your hotel.
DAY 4: PAKSE – THAILAND (B,L,D)
After breakfast departure from Pakse for Champassak, heading south aboard a local long tail riverboat, zigzagging through mild rapids and sand banks. You will tour the mysterious pre-Angkorian 10th century temple of Vat Phou a UNESCO world heritage site. Recorded on the UNESCO World Heritage List, Wat Phou with its atmosphere is a pre-angkorian temple built upon three levels. When the temple has been erected, it was the most important economic and political centre in the region. The lower level is focused on the baray (water reservoir) and the promenade to join the second level with the galleries and the quadrangular pavilions. The upper level is the sanctuary itself.
After your visit you enjoy and riverside lunch before continuing Westbound to cross into Thailand, where you will spend a night in your hotel with great views of the mighty Mekong. Dinner and overnight in your hotel.

Legend has it that Buddha himself came here to command that after his death one of his breastbones be treasured in That Phanom as a reliquary. The devoutness of the local pilgrims, which you will notice during your visit of the temple and its Buddhist mural-walls and well kept garden is quite impressive. Afterwards drive to Nakhon Phanom, where you will get acquainted with the town during a short city tour on a motor-rikscha/Tuk Tuk or by foot. In the late 1920s, Ho Chi Minh planned and organized the Vietnamese communist movement from his exile in Nakhon Phanom, you will visit the house where he lived during these years. By a short bus ride along the mighty Mekong – “the mother of all waters” as the locals call the river here – you will reach the Mekong Explorer boat.
Your cruise director and friendly crew await you this afternoon with a warm welcome upon embarkation Attend our welcome reception and enjoy the Southeast Asian specialties served during your dinner menu on board. Overnight onboard your river vessel.
DAY 6&7: PIONEERING EXPERIENCE THROUGH REMOTE NORTH-EASTERN THAILAND (B,L,D)
While enjoying your breakfast on board you will reach the starting point for your first shore excursion. You will cross the river back into Laos (As the next immigration office is several driving hours away, Mekong River Cruises arranges for a special permit by the provincial Lao government that their guests can enter Laos today without having to pass immigration). Continue to the small village of Pak Khading, where we join a longtail boat for a trip up the Nam Khading River to visit a remote village. Returning back to Thailand and your boat, you will continue your cruise.
This cruise caters especially to those travellers who fancy discovery tours and an authentic Asia more than a fixed cruise schedule without having to miss the comfort and atmosphere of a Boutique river cruise ship such as the Mekong Explorer. At night your vessel is moored at a secluded sandbank or at a small village pier. After dinner, a documentary shows e.g. the river flow of the Mekong from the Tibetan highlands all the way to the South China Sea.
The next day a short drive brings you to an impressive cliff monastery, which stands seven levels high above local rice paddies. Western visitors are sighted very seldom – just like most of the times during your entire tour.
Overnights onboard your river vessel.

Today your cruise experience continues. Along both sides of the quiet river banks you may spot every once in a while small golden temple spires, while a presentation on tropical fruits grown in this region provides with possibly surprising insight benefits used in traditional local medicine. A guided tour will get you acquainted with the bizarre, yet interesting Buddhist-Hindu sculpture park.
Overnight onboard your river vessel.
