27 AUG: Tashkent, the Green Oasis

Your sightseeing tour of this green oasis in the steppe begins in the late morning and takes to you to see the Madrassa Kukeldash, the Kavoj and Amir Timur monuments, and the typical Uzbek mud brick houses. In the evening you attend Tashkent’s famous Navoi Opera or a concert in the Tashkent Philharmonic Hall (programme permitting).

28 AUG: Tashkent and departure aboard your private train

In the morning you can take a trip to the Tian Shan Mountains, where you walk in the scenic surroundings and eat lunch. In the afternoon you board your Orient Silk Road Express private train. You may join a relaxed get-together in the dining car, where you meet your fellow travellers and learn more about your private train.

The night is spent aboard the train. (BLD)

29 AUG: Travelling through Time

During the night, your train passed through the mountains. The Greek heritage has been preserved in this inaccessible mountainous region and cultural influences of the Bactrians and the Kushan Empire also survive here. Fire worship and shamanism are still practiced here in the form of rituals and myths seldom found elsewhere. Trade caravans once travelled through these narrow mountain gorges and the armies of Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, and Tamerlane (or Timur) also passed by here. A traditional ceremony offers you a firsthand glimpse of the region’s unique folklore. Your journey along the Great Silk Road then continues aboard your train to the green city of Shakhrisabz, the birth place of Tamerlane. Your sightseeing here includes the monumental architecture of the brutal Mongol ruler’s sizable palace from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and a visit to the bustling marketplace. In the evening you depart on your private train for Bukhara. On board you are invited to a tasting of Uzbek wines.

The night is spent aboard the train. (BLD)

30 AUG: Samarqand: The Crossroads of Culture

Your private train arrives in Samarqand after breakfast. Today is spent visiting the sights of this famous and historic city, which during the rule of Timur was considered the world’s most beautiful and prestigious city. The Necropolis of Shah-e Zinde (the living Shah), the excavation sites at Afrosiab (with a museum tour), and Registan Square are certainly among the most notable architectural ensembles in Central Asia. Registan Square is surrounded by three magnificent madrassas. The colouration and ornamentation of the square’s giant gates are quite impressive. The mosques’ domes shimmering in the background complete a scene taken from an oriental fairy tale. Uzbek women burned their veils (paranjas) at this historic site in 1917, to mark their arrival in a new era.

The night is spent in a 4-star hotel in Samarqand. (BLD)

31 AUG: Samarqand, the Magnificent

Your sightseeing tour includes visits to a silk carpet manufactory and to an Uzbek craftsman’s family making paper out of mulberry bark, stops at the Ulug Beg Observatory and the ruins of the Bibi Khanum Mosque, and viewing the interior of the palace-like Gur-Emir Mausoleum. The complex contains the tomb of Timur, who transformed his capital into an eastern paradise with his many building projects, but who would go down in history as a feared conqueror.

You spend the night in your hotel in Samarqand. (BLD)

01 SEP: Samarqand

The morning is at your disposal and you leave around noon on your train. The spectacular landscape offers vistas of cinematic scope. You spend the night aboard the train. (BLD)

02 SEP: Bukhara, the Nobel One

Located in the middle of the Kyzylkum Desert, Bukhara presents some one thousand architectural monuments recalling the golden age of the Great Silk Route. Exotic spices, furs, and especially silk were stored and traded then in the city’s caravanserais. In Bukhara’s Old Town (UNESCO World Heritage), you see the almost fifty-metre tall Kalyan Minaret and the Lyab-I Hauz Ensemble by the pond. At the memorial to Nasreddin, which shows the merry prankster on his donkey, you listen to a few of his tall tales and legends. Dinner is served in a madrassa courtyard, with musical accompaniment, local dances, and a presentation of colourful national costumes.

You spend the night in a middle-class hotel in Bukhara. (BLD)

03 SEP: The Samanid Mausoleum

Bukhara is revealed as a great open-air museum that has preserved its ancient oriental countenance in an unparalleled collection of authentic architecture. You will definitely come to understand the meaning of Bukhara’s by-name “sherif” (the noble one). In the morning, you are driven to the splendid Mir-e-Arab Madrassa and the Samanid Mausoleum, certainly one of Central Asia’s most beautiful and precious structures. Afterwards you tour the massive Ark Citadel, a city within a city that was once the seat of government of Bukhara’s former rulers. There you view the Throne Room, after which you visit the last emir’s Summer Residence with its incomparable alabaster ornamentation and rich mixture of Japanese, French, Russian, and oriental styles. Before your train continues its journey in the evening, you are invited to meet the Imam of Bukhara.

The night is spent aboard the train. (BLD)

04 SEP: Khiva: A Fairy Tale in Stone from 1001 Nights

Today you will visit the oasis of Khiva, a fairy tale from 1001 nights – in stone. Standing at the mighty town wall with its gates and bastions of mud brick you feel transported into another world. Life still pulsates around the Kalta Minor Minaret, just as it did in former times. On your tour of the oasis you take in its exotic atmosphere. Its palaces, mosques, minarets, mausoleums, and madrassas (Muslim religious schools) represent some of the world’s best preserved examples of medieval oriental urban architecture. You enjoy lunch in the former emir’s Summer Palace. The night is spent aboard the train. (BLD)

05 Sep: Aral Sea

In the morning you will go on an excursion by bus (ca 90 km) from Kungrad to Mujnjak – formerly one of the most popular fishing harbours of the UDSSR. From a hill you will have a panoramic view over the dried-up Aral Sea and the well-known ship cemetery. You will get lots of explanations about the formerly Aral Sea and its sad development. In the afternoon your train continues towards Kazakhstan. Overnight on board the train. (BLD)

06 SEP: Caspian Sea

In the morning you cross vast steppes before arriving in Aktau at the Caspian Sea around noon. Check-In in your 4* hotel. Aktau is a strange city: although having 200,000 inhabitants there are more or less no street names. An excursion by bus brings you to a hollow that lies 40 m under the sea level. After a short city tour you will end up at one of the beaches and get to know with a typical bar. Overnight in your hotel. (BLD)

07 SEP: Great necropolis

In the morning you will drive to a mainly unknown necropolis situated in a desert-like landscape. Only a few visitors have ever been there. You find, for example, underground meditation halls from very old cultures. In the afternoon you train continues to its last stop. You will enjoy a Kazakh tea ceremony and typical nomad snacks on board. Overnight on board the train. (BLD)

08 SEP: Ural River and the ruins of Genghis Khans caravansary

Atyrau/Gurjev is one of the few places on earth where you can easily walk from one continent to another: On the one side of the bridge over the Ural you are in Asia and on the other side you are in Europe. Out of the city, you will visit the ruins of the former intersection point of Genghis Khans Mongolians. Afterwards, during a city trip you will see the “Golden human from Atyrau” in the museum (depending on opening hours) as well as the cattle market. At the end of the day, a caviar tasting awaits you, as you are only a few hundred kilometres away from the Volga delta. Overnight in a hotel. (BLD)

09 SEP: Return home

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your return flight or onward journey. (B)
